Immortality Links

Point: Live forever: Scientists say they’ll soon extend life ‘well beyond 120’

Like most science writing in the popular press there are problems, but it states the case fairly clearly. For the optimists, it’s basically the usual technocrat view that everything from societal problems to immortality is a simple engineering problem that can be readily solved with sufficient effort.

Counterpoint:  Variation in cancer risk among tissues can be explained by the number of stem cell divisions

This is the most recent example supporting my “you can’t get there from here” hypothesis on immortality (see here). To the extent the relationship proposed in this paper is valid (and there are a number of issues with the study, well covered here), it puts a serious limit on lifespans.

In summary, as of this writing I’m still alive and you are too, so that’s progress.
